Levels of deaf-blindness

How the world they look

Cloudy and Misty

It feel like your glasses are dirty, everything looks a little more washed out and cloudy

Tunnel Views

It has a limited field of view, similar to looking through a tunnel. Results in a loss of peripheral vision, while central vision may remain intact.

Hemianopia

It can result in someone being unable to see to either the left or right from the centre of their field of vision in both eyes

Color blind

This is a condition in which an individual is unable to distinguish between certain colors or perceive colors at all.

If your vision is deteriorating and you notice ongoing difficulties,

there may be little that can be done to prevent the condition from worsening.

Blindness and vision impairment

  • Mild

Visual acuity worse than 6/12 to 6/18

  • Moderate

Visual acuity worse than 6/18 to 6/60

  • Severe

Visual acuity worse than 6/60 to 3/60

  • Blindness

Visual acuity worse than 3/60

(World Health Organization, 2018)

Deafness and hearing impairment

(National Library of Medicine, 2020)

  • Mild hearing loss

Hearing loss of 20 to 40 dB

  • Moderate hearing loss

Hearing loss of 41 to 60 dB

  • Severe hearing loss

Hearing loss of 61 to 80 dB

  • Profound hearing loss or deafness

Hearing loss of more than 81 dB

Moderate to severe:

56-70 dB | Moderate to severeOnly can hear heavy machine sound, begins to have difficulty listening and communicating

Pitch and frequency

Some of deaf-blindness have difficulty perceiving pitch and frequency. For example they are difficult to hear “s” sound in English as these sounds are typically lower in pitch

Tinnitus

It is a medical condition that causes the perception of sound, such as ringing or buzzing, in the ears or head without any external source.
