My role:
PolarisMaps aims to help individuals with deaf-blindness travel independently. The purpose of our project is to provide indoor navigation apps with customizable visual and auditory features. By offering a three-step solution consisting of Planning, Virtual Exploration, and Actual Exploration, our project aims to meet the needs of individuals with varying levels of deaf-blindness, enabling them to navigate shopping malls comfortably.Our vision is to empower deaf-blind individuals to explore indoor environments confidently and safely, thereby enhancing their motivation to actively engage with the world. We strive to provide an experience that fosters greater independence and ignites curiosity for exploring the world.

Levels of deaf-blindness
How the world they look

Cloudy and Misty
It feel like your glasses are dirty, everything looks a little more washed out and cloudy

Tunnel Views
It has a limited field of view, similar to looking through a tunnel. Results in a loss of peripheral vision, while central vision may remain intact.

Hemianopia
It can result in someone being unable to see to either the left or right from the centre of their field of vision in both eyes
Color blind
This is a condition in which an individual is unable to distinguish between certain colors or perceive colors at all.

If your vision is deteriorating and you notice ongoing difficulties,
there may be little that can be done to prevent the condition from worsening.
Blindness and vision impairment
Visual acuity worse than 6/12 to 6/18
Visual acuity worse than 6/18 to 6/60
Visual acuity worse than 6/60 to 3/60
Visual acuity worse than 3/60

Deafness and hearing impairment

Hearing loss of 20 to 40 dB
Hearing loss of 41 to 60 dB
Hearing loss of 61 to 80 dB
Hearing loss of more than 81 dB
Moderate to severe:
56-70 dB | Moderate to severeOnly can hear heavy machine sound, begins to have difficulty listening and communicating
Pitch and frequency
Some of deaf-blindness have difficulty perceiving pitch and frequency. For example they are difficult to hear “s” sound in English as these sounds are typically lower in pitch
Tinnitus
It is a medical condition that causes the perception of sound, such as ringing or buzzing, in the ears or head without any external source.
